RecordAccount.com is encouraging their customers to check their personal records to make sure they have not become a victim of an identity theft ripoff, company officials said yesterday.
“Identity theft ripoff artists are becoming more and more sophisticated everyday,” a company spokesman said. “And far too often, people don't know they have become a ripoff victim until months later, when it's far more difficult to fix the problem. We want to help people avoid that.”
Under a typical identity theft ripoff scheme, a crook will get someone's personal information, either through a phishing site or by stealing mail or other documents. Then, they will use that information to get credit in the person's name or for other criminal activity.
“We've heard about some identity theft ripoff artists using other people's names when they get arrested,” he said. “The ripoff victim has no idea until he or she is pulled over for a traffic violation and gets arrested because there is a bench warrant in their name.”
The company said customers can make sure they have not been hit by an identity theft ripoff by entering their name in the search field and paying a small fee.
“You'll see all of the public information available about you,” he said. “You can then make sure it's accurate. If you see false information there, you can be pretty sure you have become the victim of an identity theft ripoff.”
The company said that the sooner you know you have become a ripoff victim, the easier it will be to solve the problem.
“Once you know you've been ripped off, you can contact the appropriate officials and hire a lawyer to get the information off your record,” he said.
