Window coverings are rated with an R value system. “The R value is the rating system given to determine resistance to heat loss, the higher the number the more insulating the benefits,” explains Jim Friesmuth, owner of Luv R Blinds.
Window treatments can liven up a room with color or remain simple and subtle, blending with the décor. Homeowners who make educated choices about blinds can reduce heat loss in the winter and filter out heat in the summer. The Energy Department reports 25% of energy used to heat and cool homes goes right out the window.
Window treatments reduce energy and are less expensive than purchasing new energy efficient windows. To help homeowners reduce energy use at home, manufactures have created a wide range of blinds, shades and shutters with specialized materials such as, thermal insulation, solar shades, honeycomb designs and reflective surfaces.
Horizontal and vertical slatted blinds , give homeowners the ability to control the amount of light and ventilation that comes in from the windows. Highly reflective blinds can reduce heat by 45 percent. Blinds are typically more effective at reducing the amount of heat coming in the home during the summer.
Shades are the most energy efficient choice for window coverings. Honeycomb shades carry an R2- R5 value, making them the most effective. Dual shades have to colored sides, a white side that reflects heat and a colored side that absorbs heat. The dual shades can be reversed so the reflective surface always faces the warmer side. Roller shades and Roman shades provide insulation because they are made with fiber batting and have sealed edges.
“Shades should be mounted as close to the window as possible without touching the glass, this establishes a sealed air space,” says Jim.
Shutters that have movable or louvered slats, like café, plantation or sliding, allow ventilation and natural daylight to enter a room, however they provide little insulation against heat loss.
Selecting energy efficient shades will not only save homeowners money but they can also keep out powerful UV rays that can damage floors, furniture or artwork.
