Chattanooga, TN (PRWEB) June 20, 2013

Rock/Creek and Wild Trails announced today a new challenge grant to the Chattanooga trail running community. “We want to fully rebuild the bridge over Rock Creek that was knocked out by a recent storm, and we want to do it quickly,” stated Wild Trails executive director Randy Whorton. The reconstruction has begun with a $2,000 donation, and the organizations are now turning to the community to raise the additional $2,000 needed to permanently improve the bridge, located on Lula Lake Land Trust’s core property on Lookout Mountain in Georgia.

Whorton serves as the race director for the Salomon Rock/Creek Trail Series, the source of most of Wild Trails’ funding. Last weekend’s Chattanooga Mountains Stage Race used the bridge on the second stage of three days of running.

“We all wanted to move quickly on this so that we could use the bridge for runners on Saturday, so we went ahead with it and planned to ask for public financial support later. We’re challenging the runners and the outdoor community to match our donation,” said Mark McKnight, board member for the nonprofit and Rock/Creek’s Marketing Director: “If you’ve ever used this property, you know how beautiful it is and what a treasure we have right outside of Chattanooga. Please help with a donation today. Anything will help.”

The new bridge plan will be a nail-laminated, longitudinal span bridge. The design was developed by the US Forest Service for building long clear spans in the backcountry or remote areas. The bridge is 52’ long with a piling in the center. Land Manager Noel Durant, land trust staff, and volunteers will be constructing the bridge.

As Durant explains, “We are raising the footings of the bridge and the new materials will have improved durability over the previous bridge. We were excited to get this bridge rebuilt so quickly, and would love to have the community’s support in finishing the project. We’d like to give a big thanks to the running community, Wild Trails and of course Rock/Creek for their support on this project.”

To donate, send checks to Lula Lake Land Trust, PO Box 395, Lookout Mtn. TN 37350 (with “bridge replacement” in the memo line) or donate online at lulalake.org, click “Make a Donation.”
