Just in time for the 2013 sailing season, the Sailing App is available now at the iTunes store for the iPhone. It will be followed by a version for the iPad which will then be followed by a version for Android operating systems. Sailing App launches in the English language but additional languages are expected in future versions. There is a web site with additional information and direct links to the app at the iTunes store, found at http://www.SailingApp.com.
Jim Swenerton, President and CEO of AllBoat Technology, explains why sailors will want to download SailingApp. “There are already many boating apps for smart phones. But what we found when we began to use them on our sail outings was generally of poor quality.” He continues, “We started with a clean slate and an eager development team. Thus, our slogan, 'built from the Water up for sailors by sailors.'”
The main function of the app is built into two main categories; Tools and Topics. The Tools category features a variety of necessary calculation tools such as the one to determine how much anchor rode is sufficient based on the depth of the water. The Tools category also includes over a dozen checklists that can be used for important processes and procedures that occur while sailing. The Topics category features forty different topics that are essential for good seamanship practices when on the water. Topics such as anchoring, docking and mooring relate easily to understand information in one click. Additionally, the sailor will find other categories to help them personalize the app for their own needs, including: favorites, reminders, notes and links. Swenerton says, “I got tired of fumbling around searching for information I needed, when I needed it (while sailing.)” The SailingApp is designed to be usable, connected to the internet or not!
The app has been built within the framework of a database. This means that future updates, new versions, as well as, input from the users themselves will be able to be incorporated into the Sailing App whenever it is warranted. One of the first features of this aspect of the app will be seen when the iPad version launches in the next month. Unlike many iPad apps, which turn out to be just overgrown versions of an iPhone app, the SailingApp on the iPad will utilize the larger screen and additional features found on the iPad, not found on the iPhone.
AllBoat Technology Vice President and Director of Marketing, Chris Tucker, explains that the iPhone app is priced at $5.99. “Sailors reading this story who download the app between now and May 31, 2013 will be known as 'Founders,' whom will be protected from any upgrade or new version costs forever!” He concludes, “With what we have planned for the SailingApp in the future, sailors who like to combine technology with their passion will want to take advantage of becoming a Founder.”
