New York, NY (PRWEB) January 31, 2013

Jeff Korek, a partner at Gersowitz, Libo & Korek, P.C., one of New York’s leading personal injury law firms, announced today that the firm is offering free case evaluations to help the victims and their families who were involved in the Manhattan ferry accident on January 9, 2013.

According to the New York Times, the Seastreak Ferry had been traveling at over 10 miles per hour just before it slammed into a pier near the South Street Seaport near New York’s financial district, ripping a large gash on the starboard bow. The Times also reported that nearly 60 of the more than 300 passengers aboard the Ferry were injured. Two people were critically injured and nine were seriously wounded.

“All of us at Gersowitz, Libo & Korek, P.C. wish the victims of the ferry accident a speedy and complete recovery,” New York injury lawyer said Jeff Korek. “We are here to answer any questions the victims or their family members may have with regard to their legal rights.”

The Seastreak Ferry, owned by the private entity Seastreak LLC, is a public transportation vessel that provides daily service between Atlantic Highland in New Jersey and the piers in Lower Manhattan.

With regard to this most recent crash, the Chicago Tribune notes that the reverse thrusters failed to work as the vessel neared the dock. The Tribune further reported that the Ferry’s captain attempted to slow the vessel but the commands did not respond. Investigations are still on going.
“Whether operator error, faulty equipment or negligence caused the crash and subsequent injuries to the passengers, the private vessel owner may be held responsible,” Korek said. “Every day, thousands of people depend on the ferries. It is critical that they are safe and reliable.”
