Cinque Terre is a beautiful but logistically misunderstood region. Sharing how the area developed equals educated travelers who will enjoy the five lands that much more.
Chicago, IL (PRWEB) April 01, 2013
Select Italy will be partnering with the Wilmette Public Library to host a unique “you are there” visit on April 4th to the five famous coastal villages of Le Cinque Terre. Italian travel experts will be providing information regarding the setting of Jess Walter’s best-selling novel, Beautiful Ruins. The presentation will be held in the main auditorium of the library at 1 pm and 7 pm and is free and open to the general public. It will be a segment of the Armchair Travel Series and the second part of the library’s event calendar for the One Book, Everybody Reads program.
Alison Duray and Martina Mullen are Select Italy’s travel representatives and will be the speakers presenting the material on the five lands. Duray comments “Cinque Terre is a beautiful but logistically misunderstood region. Sharing how the area developed equals educated travelers who will enjoy the five lands that much more.”
Jess Walter’s novel, Beautiful Ruins, was partially taken place in Porto Vergona. Porto Vergona is an imaginary town that was placed along the coast just south of Cinque Terre. The book refers to the five lands and other towns in the area frequently throughout the novel. This presentation will enhance readers’ knowledge regarding the context of the novel and travel to the area in general.
The presentation will include historical and cultural information regarding the five lands. The isolation and inaccessibility to the villages have affected the residents since antiquity to modernity yet discussion of the consequences of outsiders throughout history will be included. It will begin with the unknown origins of the villages since the Neolithic period moving into the invasion and pillages of the pirates in the Middle Ages. Beautiful Ruins refers to World War II often and the effects on the Italian Riviera; the travel representatives will detail the devastations and provide stories to enhance knowledge. Outsiders continue to explore Cinque Terre and recently the area has seen an influx of tourism. Sustainability efforts have been increasing annually in order to preserve the towns environment and culture, although, tourism also brings many positive additions to the area.
Many have not traveled to Cinque Terre; therefore, the presentation will include walk-throughs of the towns of Monterosso al Mare, Vernazza, and the Via dell’Amore (Pathway of Love) including details that are unique to each of the five towns. These segments will allow the audience to envision the setting of the novel and experience Cinque Terre without the hassle of traveling to the towns. Lastly, the presentation will include the specialties of the region such as pesto, focaccia, grapes, wine, and much more with a small tasting provided.
Although this presentation is part of the Wilmette Public Library’s One Book One Library, Select Italy has volunteered their expertise to enhance the library’s community and promotional efforts.
