According to the results, the 2013 SEO study found that the number of backlinks increased five-fold as the position in Google SERPs increased. The body copy of high-ranking pages was an average of 900 words. The higher ranking web pages used keyphrases sparingly in the body copy. The study also found that backlinks continue to play a significant role in ranking. The same goes for social signals; the more Tweets, Facebook likes, and Facebook shares, the higher the ranking.

“While not exhaustive, the results of this study provide smaller brands with some insight on what the Google algorithm is looking for. For brands working on a tight online marketing budget, these results can help them focus their efforts,” Reuter concludes.
