An inherent problem in most shift scheduling software is the way schedules are thought of and designed from inception; creating schedules is easy but that is only half the battle. The truth is that creating a static shift structure for one time use may sometimes appear easy, but assigning the correct employee to each shift can be a constant challenge, one that most staff scheduling software is just not able to handle.

EmLogis presents a much more complete solution to shift scheduling challenges by rethinking the entire premise of employee scheduling.

"Our belief is that creating shifts may or may not be a one-time activity," says Chris Kiklas, Vice President of Services at EmLogis, "so we started by making it easy to create not only static shifts, but shifts that match actual need based on customer activity and other business activities that can be automatically created and adjusted as needed."

The next innovation that EmLogis has brought to the employee scheduling world is the concept of rules-based assignments. "Something we learned from our customers early on," says Les Amidei, CEO at EmLogis, "is that there were lots of rules that applied to the company and to each individual employee that supervisors had to know in order to successfully assign employees to shifts. We have gone to great lengths to codify these rules, like availability and minimum and maximum work hours and employee preferences, and allow them to be set up at multiple levels: company, location and employee, for example."

Once these scheduling rules are put in place, EmLogis’ system can generate shift structures and correctly assign employees to shifts with very little, if any, input or modification required on the part of a scheduler or supervisor.

"Our system is able to remember all of these rules and see all possible assignments and can produce a schedule in a very short period of time that meets all the rules of the company and the employee, giving the company peace of mind in regards to financial objectives and employees a feeling of control since all of their work conditions are met without having to turn to self-scheduling software," says Amidei, "we think all parties will be happier with our rules-driven solution."
