In April of 2012, the Federal Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) announced its National Emphasis Program for safety inspections of senior living communities (skilled nursing and residential care).

So, to help prepare for this new federal focus, Silverado memory care communities developed and widely-implemented an aggressive internal inspection program dubbed SilveradoOSHA.

The program, which consists of annual inspections that go well beyond federal requirements, is not restricted to a checklist approach or to the limited areas targeted under OSHA. In fact, the complex inspections involve personnel and training audits along with a comprehensive physical plant inspection that is conducted with the help of a trained OSHA specialist.

Since its introduction in March of 2012, SilveradoOSHA has already made a tremendous impact on organizational safety – reducing workplace injury claims by approximately 11 percent and trips/falls claims by about 15 percent.

“A poor OSHA inspection can literally shut down operations in our line of work,” explains Silverado Vice President of Risk Management Frank Russo. “Silverado memory care communities support elderly residents with various levels of frailty. Therefore, a bad inspection would impact the lives of our residents, which is undoubtedly our greatest concern.”

For its exemplary effort in reducing staff and resident injuries, the SilveradoOSHA program has now gained national recognition from the Assisted Living Federation of America (ALFA), who recently gave the program a top rank in its annual Best of the Best Awards.

“We have the honor to spread the good news about remarkable resident-centered programs fulfilling every aspect of senior-living operations,” explains Rick Grimes, president and CEO of ALFA.

ALFA’s Best of the Best program submissions are judged for their uniqueness, innovation and impact on residents, their families, staff and operations; they are a reflection of the industry’s most innovative organizations.
