Bacs, the governing body behind Direct Debit, has collaborated with Wandsworth Council and 16 other London boroughs in a bid to increase the usage of this payment method. Residents who sign up to pay via Direct Debit before July 13 will be entered into the £25,000 prize draw, along with those who are already paying their bills this way.
Finance spokesman Cllr Guy Senior said: "There are lots of benefits for residents who use Direct Debit to pay their bills. It offers a safe, secure and convenient payment method and means they don't have the worry or inconvenience of having to remember to pay each month. Once they have signed up they literally never have to worry about it again.
"And because Direct Debit reduces the costs incurred by town halls, the more people that sign up, the bigger the savings that can be passed back to taxpayers. Using Direct Debit can help keep council tax bills in Wandsworth among the country's lowest."
SmartDebit, one of the largest Direct Debit bureaus in the UK, actively encourages consumers to pay their bills via Direct Debit. A spokesperson for the Surrey-based firm explained, “We are seeing a number of public sector organisations across the UK, such as housing associations and toll roads, turning to Direct Debit in order to make savings and drive efficiencies.”
He continues, “According to Bacs, 75 per cent of UK adults have at least one Direct Debit commitment, we encourage the Wandsworth residents to add one more for the chance of winning £25,000!”
