Dr. Peter H. Edwards Jr., renowned sports medicine surgeon with Ohio Orthopedic Center of Excellence, announces plans to spearhead one of Columbus, Ohio's largest soccer injury prevention programs in an effort to use evidence-based medicine to reduce risk of ACL injury in youth soccer athletes.
With support from DePuy Mitek and Safe Kids USA, Dr. Edwards plans to teach the Fifa 11+ soccer injury prevention program to approximately 240 soccer youth. The program will include education for parents, coaches and athletes followed by instruction of the FIFA 11 plus program, directed by physical therapy and athletic training staff of Ohio Orthopedic Center of Excellence.
As team physician for US Mens and Women's National Teams and The Columbus Crew, Dr. Edwards has researched and supported the idea of injury prevention for decades now. Says Dr. Edwards "Prevention programs can go a long way in reducing risk of serious injury to our young athletes. I am committed to doing my part to increase knowledge and practical application in coaches, parents and players and keep our kids healthy, active and on the field where they love to be."
The initial programs are scheduled to take place March 14th and March 20th at Stars Sports in Columbus, Ohio. The goal is to raise awareness and participation in order to continue this programming statewide and eventually influence the region.
