Numero Uno Web Solutions (NumeroUnoWeb.com), a fast-growing global Internet marketing firm that caters to small- and mid-size business-to-consumer companies, is releasing its expert opinion on a recent ExactTarget report that reveals the impact social media channels like Facebook and Twitter have on Canadian consumers.
According to ExactTarget, Canada is one of the most digitally connected countries in the world, with approximately 85% of the 18-and-over population online. On top of that, 54% of Canadian Internet users own a smartphone. For small- and medium-sized businesses wanting to connect with this growing demographic, they need to ensure all of their online marketing efforts are mobile-friendly. “Smaller businesses that understand their target audience’s purchasing behaviours have an advantage over those who do not and, as a result, can leverage this information, and implement it in targeted online marketing strategies,” says Nadia Iaboni, digital solutions manager at Numero Uno Web Solutions.
Social media plays a key role in the online purchasing decision of most Canadians, according to Iaboni. The ExactTarget report shows that 61% of online Canadians use Facebook, with almost half (48%) of Facebook users ages 18–34 reporting checking the site compulsively throughout the day. In addition, almost one quarter (24%) of consumers ages 25–34 on Facebook have made a purchase after receiving a marketing message on Facebook. (Source: Ibid.)
According to the same report, Twitter users are more likely than Facebook and e-mail users to buy from (31%) and recommend (27%) a company after engaging with them online. Thirteen percent of online Canadian consumers have followed a brand on Twitter. Though Twitter users represent a smaller portion of online users, says Iaboni, Twitter users have influence outside of Twitter and are more likely to blog or create content hosted elsewhere. As a result, the report shows that the real impact with Twitter on sales is in its ability to connect with those who can influence the purchasing decisions across a smaller network of people, she notes. “When it comes to engaging with consumers, Twitter and Facebook are two of the most important online social media channels,” Iaboni adds. "But to build meaningful relationships, brands need to develop content that plays to the strengths of each channel and the different demographics.”
