Parker Williams is a web entrepreneur that started his career designing websites and eventually moved onto publishing and Internet marketing ventures. He is a staunch proponent of small business ownership.

"A friend of mine came to me recently a little stressed that her son just recently graduated from college and can't find a job. She told me he gets great comments at interviews, but never a call back," Parker explains. "I told her, so why don't you encourage him to start his own business?"

To many Americans, the idea of making your own money by starting up your business is a foreign concept. Additionally, a U.S. News article revealed that entrepreneurship has been on a sharp and steady decline since 2006.

The statistic that only a little over 50% of small businesses survive for at least five years according to the Small Business Administration is another reason why some people are afraid to "take the plunge" and start a small business.

But the truth is that one of the major reasons for small business failure is lack of planning, and that is what Parker's new Start Up a Small Business website addresses.

Parker's website contains a clear-cut 15 step guide for how to effectively plan, start, and manage a small business. It starts off with the planning process (figure out what you're good at and then determine if that product or service is in demand) and ends with advice on where to go for help when managing your small business.

The website has started off as a general resource with links to reputable sources about small business ownership, but Parker is expanding it to include comprehensive advice and discussions as well as an in-depth knowledge-base on how to start a small business.

For anyone who's still wary of the process and risks involved with starting a small company, Parker says it's more risky not to take that chance. He points to the plight of the many unemployed (endearingly named "the 99ers" by major news media pundits) who were blindsided by unexpected job loss after the recession of 2008. Job security is a largely becoming a myth at many large corporations.

"We're taught all of our life that we should strive to work for someone else," Parker says. "Most of us have never had someone teach us from a young age the value of finding your individual talent and generating an income by starting up a small company instead of slaving away for a corporate entity that can drop you at any time like a hot potato."

If you have been thinking about starting up a small business, maybe now's the time. It can be anything from selling hand-crocheted mittens to starting a technology consulting firm--as long as your ultimate plan is to turn a profit.

Visit the Start Up a Small Business website and view the 15-step process (including resources) to get on the right track.
