Columbia, SC (PRWEB) May 14, 2013
South Carolina car accident attorney Ben Matthews of Matthews & Megna said today a recent fatal accident involving a high school student serves a reminder that parents and teachers should discuss highway safety with teenagers.
An April 7, 2013, car accident in Marion County claimed the life of an 18-year-old, according to the News & Record. The accident remains under investigation, according to the newspaper.
“While all fatal car accidents are tragic, accidents involving young people are especially heartbreaking,” said Matthews, whose firm represents people seriously injured in accidents. “That’s why we support efforts to encourage safe driving habits. We see too many accidents in South Carolina involving young people.”
Matthews said parents, teachers and law enforcement should speak to teenagers about developing safe driving habits. “Schools can invite police officers to speak to students,” Matthews said. “Parents should tell their teenagers never to drink and drive or text and drive. Let them know that if they are at a party and consumed alcohol, they should feel comfortable calling up their parents and asking for a ride home.”
Matthews said parents can review the safety tips with their teenagers. “Tell them to keep their cell phones off and don’t text when they’re driving, not even if they’re stuck at a red light. Tell them to obey the speed limit and drive solo. A teenager with another teen passenger in the car faces a higher risk of getting into an accident.”
Determining exactly what causes serious or fatal car accidents requires a great deal of skill and expertise, Matthews said. “There are so many different factors and issues that need to be addressed after a serious or fatal car accident,” Matthews said. “No one really wants to deal with them, especially a family grieving the loss of a loved one. That’s why we do all the work so families can focus on what really matters – their recovery. A serious or fatal car accident is a traumatic event. No one should try to deal with insurance companies or insurance adjusters alone. Leave the paperwork to us. That’s what we do. That’s what we’re here for – to help you get your life back on track.”
