It has been over a month since most high school graduation ceremonies, and this year there was an increase in the number of graduates who received plastic surgery as gifts, according to The New Jersey News Room.

“Teens consider plastic surgery for a number of reasons, but we have certainly experienced an increased interest in recent years. The number one cosmetic procedure among teens is rhinoplasty,” says Beverly Hills rhinoplasty expert, Dr. Babak Azizzadeh.

While parental consent is required for cosmetic procedures done on anyone younger than 18 years old, surgeons across the country claim the number of teenage rhinoplasty patients they see sometimes quadruples around graduation time. Most experts agree that for appropriately selected teenage patients, cosmetic plastic surgery can have a positive impact on physical and emotional development.

“Regardless of why a teen is considering plastic surgery, we always have a long and in-depth discussion about whether it is the right procedure or not. It is very important that a teenage patient is deciding for themselves that they want the surgery, and that they are not being pressured by their parents to have the procedure,” says Dr. Azizzadeh.

The American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery has suggested guidelines for teenagers seeking cosmetic surgeries. They recommend looking at the teen’s physical and emotional maturity, checking credentials, and considering the risks of a procedure.
