Take a tour backstage at the Palladium and Hale's Brewery with Twisted Cabaret's hunchback magician Flynch. Learn about beer, see some magic, and have a blast.

Processing tanks at Hale's Brewery in Seattle.

Ale uses only four ingredients. Hops, Barley, Yeast, and Water. The magic is in how you combine them.

There are only four ingredients used to brew the world's best beers; the magic comes in the quality, flavor, and characteristic of the ingredients and in how you combine them.

What happens when a comedic hunchback and an old English Alehouse combine forces? We took Hale’s Hunchback tour to find the answer to that question. The answer, it turns out, is magic. Hale’s Brewery is the biggest small brewery in Seattle. Good. The hunchback is Paul Nathan, the co-star of Twisted Cabaret. The tour was a hilarious mixture of history, science, hastily improvised comedic factoids and magic. We learned about the different types of beer (Ales and Lagers), the history and science of brewing, and even tasted the ingredients that go into ale (barley, hops, yeast, and water).

The tour starts in Hale’s Palladium with a drop dead funny cabaret show in which Nathan plays Flynch, the lovable hunchback sidekick. After the show Flynch collects a small group together for the tour and takes us backstage to meet the band, crew, and the star of the show. We got to see how a lot of the fun costumes in the show are created and have a quick chat with the star of the show and the band. This would have been amazing by itself and I for one could have theater geeked for an hour backstage with the band and the stage hands but Flynch had a plan and a timetable and we were running behind. So off we went through a backstage access door to the brewery.

Flynch is a font of information

“There are two main types of beer, ale and lager.”

“There are only four ingredients used to brew the world's best beers; the magic comes in the quality, flavor, and characteristic of the ingredients and in how you combine them.”

“Unlike wine, beer is best served fresh and the freshest you can get is right at the brewery.”

“Half of the heat used to brew the beer at Hale’s comes from solar panels on the roof of brewery”

Hale’s is a microbrewery brewing only a few thousand gallons of beer at a time all of it for local consumption both in house and at pubs, restaurants, and shops in the Seattle area. Good. The process is fascinating and the tour was in depth without getting bogged down in minutia. Flynch (Nathan) is a natural storyteller and teacher who truly loves his subject and brings the history and mystery of beer to life in a fun tour that ended with an ale tasting and magic show.

Flynch doesn’t do magic in Twisted Cabaret, which is a fantastically funny one man burlesque cabaret show starring New Vaudeville sensation Frank Olivier. Frank does all the tricks in the show including knife-throwing, magic, juggling, acrobatics and about a dozen other high energy and hilarious acts. Flynch acts as a slow-witted foil and affable host. After seeing the show and falling in love with the characters it’s a real joy to take the tour, and the delicious ale served at the end is all the more delightful with a bit of context.

The tour is not available to the general public, you have to buy tickets to the show, then get the tickets as an-add on. The show was a delight the tour was fantastic, fun, and informative. With something for everyone you will be hard pressed to find a better night out in Seattle.
