COSTA MESA, Calif. -- Whittier Law School students and faculty raised $2,000 today to help victims of Hurricane Sandy by floating more than 600 boats in the fountains in front of Whittier Law School in a dramatic and colorful day of support.
The one-day fundraising campaign, dubbed “Float Your Boat for Hurricane Sandy Victims,” invited participants to buy toy boats from the Student Bar Association. Busy law students took a break from their studies to fill the main fountain pool filled with dozens of the small plastic boats.
The Student Bar Association sold the toy boats to students, the faculty and the legal community, with 100% of the proceeds going directly to the American Red Cross for distribution. Contributors were also able to purchase a boat online.
“The true spirit of Whittier Law School really shone as we all rallied around this cause, with an outpouring of support and goodwill,” said Jill Hiraizumi, the vice president of Whittier Law School’s Student Bar Association. “We know that many people are still suffering from great losses and hardships two weeks after the hurricane, and we’re grateful to be able to help out by donating to the American Red Cross.”
According to Ty Woolworth, Associate Director of Corporate Development at American Red Cross, “We are so grateful to Whittier Law School for raising the helping the Red Cross as we help those affected by Superstorm Sandy. Your donations will help us to serve millions of people affected by the storm.”
