Drew, authors of “Pendulum: How Past Generations Shape Our Present and Predict Our Future,” point to the recent vilification of WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange as an “enemy” as indicative of a greater cultural attitude of exclusion and fear of that which is perceived as different. According to “Pendulum,” society is moving from a more collective, community-minded era into one where finger-pointing and scrutiny against anything considered against the grain becomes more popular and acceptable.
“People are considered more by what they are not than by who they are today,” states author Michael R. So it's easy to label Assange an enemy of the state (whether or not that's true) as a way of making him seem evil, rather than as a self-promoter of dubious character whose website leaked embarrassing documents about governments' travails in war and peace.”
In researching over three millennia of cultural, political and social history, Mr. Williams and Mr. Drew found that there are predictable cycles that occur every 40 years. These cycles move from individualistic “me” eras to more cooperative, civic-minded “we” eras. The current “we” cycle began in 2003.
Our current position puts us nearly a decade into a “we” era, a time at which the authors say there is a palatable shift into an “I’m OK, you’re not OK” type of thinking. At this point, society begins to take things too far in how it views other people. In the current cycle, now is the perfect time for someone who is considered too much of an iconoclast, like Assange, to be considered “anti-community.”
The authors believe that Assange’s targeting as an “enemy” reveals something very important about how society thinks and the direction that we are heading.
Mr. Drew states, “In this case the new normal is calling someone a traitor, or even hinting that a person might be an enemy of the state, for revealing information that isn't all that damning but instead shows the fallibility of any government in its diplomatic relations. It's no longer, ‘Ask what you can do for your country,’ but “Your country considers you dangerous for being different.’”
