Kimball Starr Interior Design

The industrial pieces match the architecture and scope of the space, but the natural elements bring a sense of warmth and peace. It’s an oasis in the urban ecosystem—a clean, uncluttered retreat right in the center of the city.

San Francisco, CA (PRWEB) April 24, 2013

Kimball Starr, deemed one of the best interior designers in San Francisco, is the only designer from the United States chosen for inclusion in the recently published Zen Style Residences, a celebration of the finest examples of Zen interior design. The San Francisco interior design firm’s featured project is a meditative residential loft design inspired by nature that creates tranquility in the middle of bustling downtown San Francisco. Phoenix Books, the publisher of the collection, celebrates the integration of natural elements, Oriental antiques, and a hint of industrial influence in Starr’s design.

“I am delighted to be included in this beautiful and inspiring collection of Zen design,” said Starr. “This book highlights many heavyweight design firms from around the globe, and it’s an honor to have my work stand next to theirs.”

Zen Style Residences aptly named the project “Meditative Living Space Inspired by Nature” and elaborates on the San Francisco Zen designer’s concept. The home “provides an escape from the noisy downtown streets of San Francisco, by creating an interior that communicates tranquility, connection to nature, and the importance of meditative reflection. To nourish the soul, the space is free from clutter and distraction and is punctuated with organic elements inspired from nature.”

Visitors walk into the loft and leave behind the chaos and distraction of the city. The ethereal entry area greets the eye with white luminous Tyvek quietly undulating behind a sculptural art display of Buddhist statues, bamboo, and glowing Capiz seashells. Organic elements of fallen redwood, Douglas fir, and cork tree bark are integrated into the living and dining areas, creating a calming connection to nature.

The Japanese-inspired design respects Zen design tradition but also incorporates modern elements. Juxtapositions of a bamboo coffee table wrapped with brawny black steel, tarnished silvery metal fireplace tiles countered by hand-planed timber, and bedroom sconces molded with handmade Japanese paper against fiberglass reveal beautiful contrasts of tradition with modern invention.

“I wanted to create a modern Zen style for this loft,” explained Starr. “The industrial pieces match the architecture and scope of the space, but the natural elements bring a sense of warmth and peace. It’s an oasis in the urban ecosystem—a clean, uncluttered retreat right in the center of the city.”

Zen Style Residences was written by Tianjin Ifengspace Guangzhou and published by Phoenix Publishing Limited. It focuses on residential spaces designed in modern Zen style, Japanese Zen style, Chinese Zen style, and hotels and resorts that incorporate Zen elements. The 272-page hardcover volume features enticing photographs and explanatory text. The book is available for purchase at http://www.phoenix-book.com.
