Beginning in 2012, Puerto Rico will play a role in the PGA TOUR's new venture into the Americas. Mario González Lafuente, Executive Director of the Puerto Rico Tourism Company, congratulated the Puerto Rico Golf Association for the achievement.“We are aware that the PRGA has been working on this project for the past seven years; and are proud to be part of the PGA Tour Latinoamerica,” said González Lafuente.
The new entry tour will help those golfers competing in it; make it onto the PGA TOUR. The event will generate additional room nights and have a direct and indirect economic impact while continuing to showcase Puerto Rico particularly throughout the Americas. This is not the first time Puerto Rico golf courses have hosted a PGA tournament.
According to Sidney Wolf, President / High Performance Program & International Affairs, the PGA Tour Latinoamerica will help develop Puerto Rico’s golfers while continually promoting golf in Puerto Rico to the world. The prize money for the new Tour is not to exceed $175,000.00. “We now can say that Puerto Rico hosts the best of the best golfing events,” added Wolf who mentioned these include:
- The AJGA (American Junior Golf Association.top Junior Golfers Tour) in January,
- The NCAA Puerto Rico Classic ( the very best 15 top Women and Men college university teams) in February,
- The PGA TOUR with the very successful Puerto Rico Open presented by seepuertorico.com in March
- The PGA TOUR Latinoamerica in November 2012.
