PureDepth, Inc. , the creator of Multi-Layer Display (MLD) technology and a leader in new visualization experiences, today announced the European Union has granted a foundation patent covering the company’s unique MLD displays, which contain two or more layers of display panels placed in front of one another in a single monitor. The company’s foundation patent number EP1057070 has now been granted in every jurisdiction in which it was filed, bolstering PureDepth’s robust international portfolio of intellectual property, which consists of more than 150 pending and allowed patents.

The newly allowed patent covers PureDepth displays using multi-layered images, with each layer formed by a display device or combination of display devices in which the foreground screen(s) is(are) selectively transparent. This allows for the simultaneous, individual, transparent and opaque control of layered imagery – allowing it to be moved from one panel to another – via processor, hardware and embedded or external software. This process enables the user to see overlaid objects at the same time – for example, a foreground and a background image or a word processing program and a spreadsheet program – without having to switch from one to the other, allowing for incredibly lifelike visualization experiences and increased productivity.

“The EU’s granting of this hugely important foundation patent strengthens PureDepth’s position as the only company that can offer a high-contrast viewing experience with incredible colors and real depth,” said PureDepth CEO Andy Wood. “Successfully securing this patent in all the world’s major markets also solidifies our status as a worldwide leader in the 3-D and visualization space.”

PureDepth’s MLD technology offers 3-D-like imagery without the need for special glasses. By providing real depth, instead of a simulation, PureDepth’s technology delivers the most lifelike and most useful visual experience ever available, without negative side effects like headaches and dizziness. Since its inception, PureDepth has established itself as an innovator in the 3-D and visualization space, and the company continues to expand its leading technology offerings by licensing and supporting its technology with partners, including OEMs and developers, to bring cutting-edge visual display products to market.
