New Facebook Site Draws Attendees to Boys & Girls Club Charity Social

Portland-based Quango design + marketing helps the Boys & Girls Club of Portland work toward a $1 million fund raising goal by creating an innovative social networking campaign on Facebook

Quango launched a campaign today through the social networking site Facebook to help Boys & Girls Club of Portland boost attendance at their annual Showcase of Wine & Cheese. Boys & Girls Club of Portland, a non-profit organization dedicated to enabling all young people to reach their full potential, seek to exceed their 2008 fundraising goals. Portland-based Quango, an independent, full-service graphic design agency specializing in creative branding, marketing and interactive solutions, has lent its talents pro-bono to heighten awareness and increase community participation in the event.

A Chance to Connect

"From last year's experience, we recognized that attendees view the Showcase as a fun evening to connect with friends over great wine and food," said Dave Anolik, Quango Chief Creative Officer. "This made it an ideal match for Facebook, where members can RSVP, get updates, browse event details and see which friends and colleagues are planning on attending."

The Guest List

Held each February at the Portland Convention Center, the Showcase of Wine & Cheese is the keystone fundraiser for Boys & Girls Club of Portland Metropolitan Area. Quango approached the Club with an innovative idea to market their annual event through a Facebook social networking campaign. While traditional media buys allow access to a large, general audience, social networking campaigns reach specific, targeted demographics. Quango focused the Club's message, inviting Facebook members whose interests--such as fine dining, wine or charitable work--align with the event.

$1 Million Goal

"Last year, Boys & Girls Club of Portland's Showcase of Wine & Cheese raised $932,000; this year, our goal is to raise over $1 million to support our youth programs," says Daniel Laurendeau, Executive Development Officer of Boys & Girls Club of Portland. "Quango's social networking campaign allows us to raise the awareness of this major event to help the Boys & Girls Club meet our 2009 fundraising goal."

Invitations to the Annual Showcase

Held at the Oregon Convention Center on Friday, February 20th, the annual Showcase presents over 250 varieties of wine, dozens of gourmet cheeses, hot hors d'oeuvres and other specialty foods. The Quango-designed invitations enable any registered Facebook user to RSVP, comment, post links and see other attendees. The invitees are provided links to both the Boys & Girls Club of Portland Website, created pro bono by Quango in 2008, and the event page hosted at: http://www.facebook.com/home.php?#/event.php?eid=42981754491&ref=ts
Reaching Portlanders

"Of Facebook's 150+ million active users, the average has 100 friends on the site. This represents a huge potential pool for targeted marketing efforts," says Anolik. "We wanted to take advantage of the boom in online social networking to reach Portlanders who are truly interested in getting involved in their community, what the Showcase offers, and Boys & Girls Club."
