This fun downriver race is on class II whitewater.

It is going to be a family-friendly finish to one of the biggest events of summer in Buena Vista.

Whitewater racers of all varieties will find both cold beverages and hot tacos at the finish line of the first CKS PaddleFest Race to the Grill hosted by River Runners, with onsite registration starting at 11:00 am on Monday, May 27, 2013.

Eileen Peterson, general manager, River Runners, hopes that locals and tourists alike will come to enjoy some fresh food and drinks before they head home after PaddleFest.

“This is the first event of its kind during PaddleFest,” Peterson said. “It is going to be a family-friendly finish to one of the biggest events of summer in Buena Vista.”

The sprint race, which is open to kayaks, duckies and stand-up paddleboards, is down the Milk Run section of the Arkansas River, according to Travis Hochard, operations manager, River Runners. He said participants must be comfortable in class II whitewater, be able to swim, and have a PFD and helmet.

“Paddlers will start one at a time down the four-mile section of class II whitewater, ending at the River Runner’s Grill,” Hochard explained.

Racers can register from 11:00 am – 12:00 pm on May 27 at River Runners. A free shuttle will be provided upstream to American Adventure Expeditions Rafting in Johnson Village. The cost to participate is $15 per racer and proceeds benefit the Boys and Girls Club of Chaffee County. Pre-registration is available online at http://ckspaddlefest.com/race-to-the-grill/.
