In February, 17 sales and support associates at Rapids Wholesale Equipment Company, a leading food service and bar equipment and supplies company, attended the 2013 North American Association of Food Manufacturers (NAFEM) Show in Orlando, Florida. At the convention—the largest food service show in the industry—these employees learned about new products and processes as well as existing product enhancements that can benefit both customers and the environment. Ultimately, these employees advanced their expertise in the food service and bar equipment industry, better enabling them to serve Rapids Wholesale’s clientele.

Associates at the NAFEM convention encountered what one employee described as “treasure trove of new knowledge” from some of the company’s key suppliers, including merchandise from Vulcan, Hobart, Frymaster, Manitowoc, True Refrigeration, Cleveland, Eagle Manufacturing, Advance Tabco, Star Manufacturing, Blodgett, Garland and Delfield.

The convention also gave Rapids Wholesale staffers a chance to interact with food service vendors and to ask questions to make sure they thoroughly understand the products, services and processes showcased at the convention.

While there, several Rapids employees also attended Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) certification classes. These classes provided information about how customers can reduce waste, employ “green” practices and qualify for energy star rebates and other tax incentives. This training was especially beneficial as Rapids Wholesale Equipment is an Energy-Star approved distributor partner, meaning the company carries products that allow customers to earn Energy Star incentives.

The LEED classes and the trip as a whole were very much in keeping with a major component of the Rapids Wholesale business model: Education is excellence.

Indeed, many of the associates who attended the convention have already passed a rigorous exam to become Certified Food Service Professionals (CFSP). Attending the NAFEM show allowed these team members to earn an important qualifying credit for advancing their standing as CFSPs.

Noting how critical educational opportunities of this nature are to the development of Rapids Wholesale’s sales and support staff, President Joe Schmitt says, “It was exciting to see the new equipment with all of the enhanced features. This will benefit our customers as we now have first-hand experience with these updates, enabling us to share them with our customers and answer any questions they might have.”
