Raymond C. Southern, Chief Executive Officer for Balfour Beatty Construction in Florida since 2000, will retire on December 31 after 40 years of service with the company.
As part of the company’s succession plan that started nearly two years ago, Sean DeMartino was named Division President for Balfour Beatty Construction in Florida in September 2011. The company will continue to maintain a full-service office in Plantation and a full-service office in Orlando.

He has shown by example a passion for the success of employees, the betterment of local communities and the spirit of the construction industry. Fortunately, Ray has instilled this passion with others who will continue the legacy for him.”
Southern dedicated his entire career to Balfour Beatty Construction. He began his career in 1973 in Miami, Florida as a project engineer with Frank J. Rooney, Inc. which later became Centex Construction and now operates as Balfour Beatty Construction. His demonstrated leadership abilities earned him promotions in the field to the executive level where he was named vice president in 1982, division manager in 1985 and chief operational officer in 1996.
Over the years Southern has participated as a board member for numerous organizations including the United Way of Broward County, Community Foundation of Broward County, Boys and Girls Club of Broward County, Broward Workshop, CEO Council for Broward Alliance, Miami-Dade County Product Review Board, Miami Chamber of Commerce Chairman's Circle, Florida Enterprise Florida, Inc., AGC South Florida Chapter, Florida Gulf Coast University (FGCU)/Lucas Institute for Real Estate Development and Finance Executive Council, BCN South Florida Gator Alumni Association and the University of Florida M.E. Rinker Sr., Hall School of Building Construction Advisory Council Executive Committee.
Southern was recognized in 2011 by the South Florida Business Journal as a Top 100 Power Leader; in 2010 by the South Florida Business Journal as a Broward Ultimate CEO; and in 2008 he was inducted into the University of Florida M.E. Rinker Sr., School of Building Construction Hall of Fame.
