For the past ten years, RE/MAX, one of the leading NJ realtors, has proudly supported Susan G. Komen for the Cure through fundraising and events, contributing over $5 million to breast cancer research and awareness since 2002.

In 2009, RE/MAX became a national series sponsor for the Komen Race for the Cure and continues to support the fight against breast cancer. RE/MAX of New Jersey supports this cause by sponsoring two races each year; the North Jersey race takes place in the spring and the Central and South Jersey race is held each fall.

Prior to the races, RE/MAX associates raise funds for their participation in the 5K walks and runs. On race day, they come out to support participants as well as volunteer their time to this cause.

“I've participated in two races, raised funds for three races and recruited my mother in Connecticut to race with me and then she did her own Komen race,” said Karen De Jesus of RE/MAX Gold Coast in Hoboken. “[I] wanted to do everything I could to help raise funds.” Her office even won the Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure Award from RE/MAX of New Jersey in 2010 and 2011, for raising the most funds to benefit this cause.

“I can’t even explain in words how amazing the feeling is to be a part of something so huge,” said Wendy Smith of RE/MAX Gateway in Ocean Township, who unfortunately lost both of her parents to cancer. “Cancer related events are always close to my heart.” Smith has been participating in the Central and South Jersey races since the beginning.

Aside from the Race for the Cure events, RE/MAX of New Jersey also offers its associates and offices a chance to make a difference with the Home for the Cure program. Upon the completion of a home sale or purchase of an NJ home, agents can donate to the program on behalf of the home buyer. An Agent for the Cure is asked to donate a minimum of $500 per year (which breaks down to $25 per transaction, based on 20 sales). An Office for the Cure rallies all of its agents to donate $5,000 per year as a team. As a result of agents donating from the sales made in their communities, Home for the Cure ensures that 75 percent of donations will be used locally for breast cancer education, screenings and treatments.

“Because of [the] Susan G. Komen dedication to research and promoting early detection, more women and men are surviving cancer,” said Brenda Harris of RE/MAX Llewellyn in West Orange, who has been supporting the cause with RE/MAX since its inception, and since the early 1990’s with other groups.

RE/MAX offices and associates are also encouraged to participate in Passionately Pink for the Cure by organizing “Pink events” to raise additional donations for Susan G. Komen for the Cure. These events are coordinated by individual offices or associates as fun, different ways to support the foundation.

This fall, RE/MAX of New Jersey will be hosting its annual Race for the Cure on September 30th in Jackson, NJ at Six Flags Great Adventure. Registration will begin at 7 a.m., followed by the 5K run at 8 a.m. A survivor program and awards, as well as 4K and one-mile walks and a children’s fun run will take place throughout the day.
