Employees of ASTAR Air Cargo today began preparing hundreds of gift baskets containing free turkey dinners for the men and women who receive meals and housing from the Fairhaven Rescue Mission in Covington, KY. This program is one component of ASTAR’s fifth annual holiday giving campaign, which the company launched last month by donating more than 1,000 turkeys to area charities.

We know that in this difficult economy, and especially during this time of year, places like the Fairhaven Rescue Mission can use all the help they can get.

"We are thrilled to be able to continue our work helping the men and women who look to the Fairhaven Rescue Mission for food and shelter," said Martin Godly, ASTAR Air Cargo Managing Director, Operations Finance and Community Relations. "We know that in this difficult economy, and especially during this time of year, places like the Fairhaven Rescue Mission can use all the help they can get."

In total, ASTAR will distribute 300 dinners to the Fairhaven Rescue Mission. The dinners will include one turkey, two cans of corn, green beans, sweet potatoes, apple sauce, stuffing, gravy, macaroni and cheese, a box of potatoes, and a box of Jiffy corn muffin mix. Each meal will feed one average sized family. The Fairhaven Rescue Mission serves thousands of meals a month and houses homeless men every night. The mission also offers tutoring, emergency assistance, after school programs, and computer instruction. Additionally, the mission provides clothing for men, women, and children.

As part of the annual ASTAR holiday charity effort, employees also purchase gifts for the children served by the Diocesan Catholic Children's Home (DCCH) in Ft. Mitchell, KY, St. Aloysius Orphanage (St. Al's) in Cincinnati, and Community Action in Wilmington, OH. The gifts will be distributed to the children at St. Al's and DCCH during annual holiday parties sponsored by ASTAR.

DCCH operates a long-term residence for nearly 30 children who are emotionally and behaviorally challenged and also provides short-term residency and emergency foster care. St. Al's offers foster care and other residential services for those in crisis and also provides home-based treatment intended to help keep families together. Community Action helps impoverished residents find better jobs, housing and education.
