Smart401k, an expert in participant-level investment advice for retirement plans, will focus May communication efforts on major financial planning issues women face with investing, budgeting and saving. Scott Holsopple, president Smart401k, spearheaded the idea to focus on communication for women in May.

“Several recent personal experiences reinforced the need for this focus. Having this series is a way to emphasize engagement in not only retirement planning, but personal finance as a whole,” Holsopple said.

Retirement plan participant behavior studies have examined how gender influences saving, spending and investing habits. In a recent study from Mass Mutual’s Retirement Services division, women expressed less confidence in making their own investment decisions; however, they were much more willing than men to seek help in this area.

The month-long Smart401k effort will focus on three individual female investors in various stages of personal finance: a single woman in her 20s just starting to build her credit, a married mother in mid-career who grew up with a single mother and a women nearing retirement going through a life-altering divorce. Additionally, the series will focus on balancing retirement saving with saving for college, combining finances with a spouse and what to do upon the death of a spouse. These stories and scenarios will provide a general picture of the financial issues facing professional women in the 21st Century.
