A good home is something that is easy to take for granted—at least, for those fortunate enough to have a roof overhead, day in and day out. For those who are not so fortunate, of course, housing is something that is not taken for granted at all, but rather is fervently hoped for and worked toward. As such, the move to provide affordable housing opportunities, to the poor and the needy, is an important one, both in America and in poor communities across the world. An organization called the Acumen Fund has just published a new document, called The ABCs of Affordable Housing, which offers some basic tips for those seeking to provide inexpensive shelter to the poor—and the document has won the attention, and the praise, of men like Rev. Andre Allen, of Carol Stream, Illinois.
The Acumen Fund is an organization that invests in the resources and services that are necessary for helping the world’s poorest people. These investments come in such areas as education, healthcare services, agriculture, energy, and more. Housing, too, is on the list. “If we are trying to improve the lives of the poor, we cannot ignore housing, especially as the cities where we work expand so rapidly,” says the Acumen Fund, in their introduction to the ABCs report. The document, which can be downloaded from the organization’s website, is designed to “encourage more entrepreneurs and investors to enter the affordable housing sector in Kenya” and other parts of the world.
The ABCs of Affordable Housing report has drawn the praise of many who have worked in the affordable housing sector, including Illinois pastor Rev. Andre Allen. In addition to his years of service at the New Beginnings Ministries Worldwide, Carol Stream, Rev. Andre Allen has lent his services to area organizations meant to provide affordable housing to Illinois’ poor. He is someone who believes that affordable housing should be a top priority, not just in places like Kenya, but even in the poorest communities in America—and he has responded to the ABCs report with a new press statement.
“The ABCs of Affordable Housing in Kenya report is refreshing, challenging and inspiring,” notes Rev. Andre Allen, in his statement to the press. “The world needs more of these type of voices to help provide for the most basic need of affordable housing.”
The ABCs report lists such important tips as the recognition of cultural context, relationships with local institutions, and, more basically, the value of creative thinking and of strategic risk-taking.
