Once again, Robert Morris University hosted a group of high school students this summer, giving them a taste of college life, classes, activities and being in the heart of downtown Chicago.

Thirty-four students from Illinois and surrounding states participated in Weekend Away at College 2009. Residents from Kalamazoo MI, Evansville, Lafayette and Dyer, IN, and north, west and south suburbs of Chicago participated. For three full days, the students sampled college classes, workshops and a taste of the city. Sessions were designed with student preferences in mind, giving future culinary, health science, business and graphic arts students the opportunity to experience instruction in their proposed majors.

"We held the exploratory hospitality/business and culinary session at the Shedd Aquarium," explained Nicole Farinella, dean of recruitment. "From there, the students could decide if they wanted to attend a medical workshop or a session in business at Deloitte, Touche. We also made sure to hit the fun locations like Ed Debevic's for dinner, the new ledges at the Sears/Willis Tower, Navy Pier and the Architectural Boat Tour."

The students stayed at the newly renovated student housing complex, Automatic Lofts in the west loop, and they also explored the RMU Chicago campus from top to bottom. Combining learning experiences with Chicago fun and great weather made for some very positive responses from the future college students:

"I had a blast! Everything was beyond what I expected. You guys are great! Thank you for everything!"

"This experience was awesome. The atmosphere and environment of Chicago exceeded my expectations. I absolutely loved it. The people I met here were very outgoing…I liked making new friends from all around Illinois. I just wished this experience would have been longer because I was having so much fun…"

''Make it a week-long trip.''

"Everything was excellent."

"The staff couldn't have been better. It was an amazing experience."

''Cool.''
