With the recent election of a new pope, the world found itself once again asking the age old question, “what happens behind those closed doors?” In “In Solemn Conclave” (published by AuthorHouse), author Robert L. Carneiro’s new novel, he utilizes years of study to show readers an in-depth look at how the conclave acts while electing the new pope. “Although fiction,” he says, “this account of the deliberations of a conclave of cardinal-electors is based on a close study of conclaves in the past.”
Readers are transported into the future where Pope Urban IX, pontiff of the Roman Catholic Church, after reigning for 13 years, suddenly dies of a massive heart attack. As the 77 cardinals converge on Rome to elect a new pope, readers find themselves immersed in the lore of the Catholic Church. “In addition to presenting readers with the traditional religious rituals involved in election a pope, I pepper the book with colorful incidents of papal history,” says Carneiro.
Readers watch, as if they had a backstage pass, how the cardinals vie with each other for the papacy. Carneiro also shows readers how each cardinal lives while the election is happening. “Though forced to live in rough-hewn pine cubicles, the cardinals are surrounded by some of the world’s greatest art, which greets them during the days they must remain in strict seclusion, until a new pontiff is chosen,” says the author.
With each page merging rich authentic detail with imaginative storytelling, “In Solemn Conclave” becomes an intriguing, suspenseful read until the very end. “Other novels have been written about conclaves and papal elections,” states Carneiro, “but this is the only one that follows the actions of a conclave, detail for detail, from beginning to end, with each ballot tabulated and the results announced and debated by the assembled.”
