That was more than I initially imagined.
Tampa, Florida (Vocus) March 24, 2009
Michael Westafer, CEO of the Tampa-based integrated marketing and technology company Roger West Creative and Code , is the man behind the Tampa Bay Scramble Charity Golf Tournament. What started off as a conversation with his friends and colleagues has transformed into an annual event that is changing the lives of families in the Tampa Bay community.
This year's golf scramble will be held on Saturday, May 16th, 2009 at 1:00PM at the Bardmoor Golf Club in Largo. All proceeds will benefit the United Way of Tampa Bay (UWTB) to help Bay area families achieve economic stability.
Westafer and his team at Roger West have recruited various business sponsors for this year's event from across the Bay area, including the Tampa Bay Business Journal, C & D Printing, WTAN Talk Radio, Williams Broadcast Communications, Red Bull, and more.
HOW DID IT ALL BEGIN?
In the spring of 2006, Michael Westafer was coaching a co-ed softball team. Many of the teams he competed against hosted annual golf tournaments to support their team's purchase of equipment and pay for travel fees. "We could all pay for our own equipment and travel fees, but the idea of hosting a golf scramble was very enticing. So I started thinking about people in real need," comments Westafer, adding that, "the players on the other teams raved about how much fun they were having, so I decided that I wanted to host a tournament also," says Westafer.
In the fall of 2007, the tournament was finally underway. Westafer rounded up 56 of his friends, business associates and clients, "We all had a great time, and we collected over $1,700.00 to benefit a local foundation in need," he says. "That was more than I initially imagined."
This year, the tournament was postponed a few months as Westafer prepared for a larger, more organized event. Instead of hosting the event in fall of 2008, he decided to hold off until the spring of 2009. "I learned a lot the first year and I made a few mistakes a long the way," he recalls. "I know I can do a better job this year, and bring in more money and sponsors."
Roger West has made it simple for the community to get involved, too. As an integrated marketing agency specializing in web design and web development, Roger West has created a website to showcase the event. The website includes details about the event and how to get involved, along with the option for players to register online.
