Today Door Handles Ltd is continuing their weekly campaign of home decoration tips and trends by giving a brief history of the evolution of one of their most popular products. The mere mention of round rose door handles is enough to make one think that this is the same as the infamous door knobs that ruled the world since the 18th century. While the terms handles and door knobs are actually interchangeable depending on geographical location of the speaker, they can vary in materials and design. But no matter how you call these fixtures, it will surely be in reference to something that is used to close or open a door.
Function of knobs and handles
Doors have been in existence since 5000 years ago but the door handles were only used to manipulate doors after the pivoting mechanism or the hinge was invented. Years before that, brackets and bars were used to keep the doors tightly secured and safe from accidentally being opened.
Handles for doors have become much like a fashion statement for most people and this gave rise to the manufacture of a wide array of handles including the round rose door handles. The availability of intricate and modern door handle designs has not however affected the functionality of the handles. However, different varieties have appeared depending on where the handles will be used, whether for kitchen doors, masters’ bedroom doors, children’s playroom doors or even nursery doors.
The increased demand for handles also gave rise to fancy door handles that look like animals, fruits, flowers and a wide array of objects. Some handles even come in the shape of a hand, which can sometimes be eerie when it is time to hold it and open the door. Nevertheless, the popularity of round rose door handles and the various designs that came with it has energized the construction and home fixture business.
Handles can be any of the following:
Lever on round rose or square
Contemporary doors usually feature the lever on rose, which can be used by itself when intended for doors without a lock, or used with an escutcheon or hole cover for a key when intended for doors that come with locks. Most manufactures sell the lever on rose with a complete set of spindle and screws. The demand for lever handles is on the rise because of the ease with which it can be opened even with the use of the elbows.
Mortice door handles
Just like the lever on rose, the mortice knobs require the use of escutcheon for doors that requires to be locked. However, levers are becoming more popular than the knobs because the latter are harder to manipulate especially when the hands are full. Mortice locks are usually found in old buildings but in the United Kingdom, they are also used on modern homes but with levers.
Lever on backplate
The lever on backplate is available as a latch when intended to be used as internal door handles without a lock feature, with a keyhole or with a turn and release when intended to be sued for the bathroom door. Most doors that have been fitted with the lever on backplate can no longer be fitted with a round rose door handle.
But with the popularity of the round rose buyers will now find doors that have been fitted with these handles rather than with the lever on backplate handles. This has made it more convenient for the consumers in case they decide to remodel their door handles.
