Race For The Wounded, sponsored by prominent provider of aftermarket Jeep parts and accessories, 4WD, has trained a triple amputee Marine veteran to race in the Tuff Trucks Event at Del Mar Arena. Jason Hallett, who lost both legs and an arm to an IED while serving in Afghanistan, will race as part of the Engage Offroad team. The race happens Friday June 28 and Jason will occupy one of the spots in the 3-seat F150 Raptor truck.
“A buddy of mine was originally asked to do it, but he wasn’t able to,” says Jason. “I’ll be there to make sure the driver doesn’t hit any walls on my side if he can’t see them.” The race is a time attack where drivers race against the clock and not each other and they get two attempts per day. Jason is slated to run at 1 p.m. and 5 p.m. this Friday.
Marine Lance Cpl. Jason Hallett served in the India Company, 3rd battalion, 5th regiment. In October, 2010 during his first deployment to Afghanistan, he stepped on an IED while clearing mines from a compound and lost both legs and an arm. He’s never done any off-road racing and is excited to compete in the short course event.
“It’s perfect because San Diego is a marine town so the Del Mar spot is ideal,” says Hassim Mendez, owner of Engage Offroad. “Everything just fell into place. It’s a great event to showcase the Race For The Wounded and our Engage Offroad racing adventure.”
“Usually they use the three-seater trucks to train guys on how to call turns and obstacles by communicating to the driver through a headset,” says Brett Robinson, Founder of Race For The Wounded. “Hassim really came through for us by getting Jason into the truck and we hope to have more vets racing in July and August.”
Hassim and Brett originally met at last year’s Baja 1000 and really clicked. “A lot of the guys on my Baja team are former special ops,” says Hassim. When he ran into Robinson at this year’s Baja 500, he told him that Engage Offroad had an empty seat on the truck. Brett said that he wanted to give wounded vets a chance to race and preparation met opportunity.
“Race For The Wounded was founded to give injured veterans a part of their life back by allowing them to compete in something they may never have thought was possible after their injuries,” says Robinson. The organization has earned 501c3 non-profit designation, championing the cause of getting disabled vets into off-roading.
