Long Beach Police Department Uses GTS’ G700SE-M GPS-Enabled Tactical Camera for Long Beach Harbor Security Sweep

Geo Tactical Solutions (GTS) joins the Long Beach Police Department on a security sweep dive to test the durability and features of the G700SE-M GPS camera. Using the advanced GPS and ‘Memo’ features of the camera, operators were able to collect GPS coordinates of photographed ‘objects’ while tagging each photograph with attribute data (‘memos’) such as GPS date and time, operator’s name, unit ID, operation type, etc.

Each photograph collected in the field effectively answers the critical who, what, when, where and why.

Geo Tactical Solutions, Inc. (GTS), a leading provider of advanced GPS-enabled cameras, GPS modules, and photo mapping software, was recently invited to take part in an operational security sweep dive with the Long Beach Police Department. The purpose of GTS’ involvement was for showcasing and testing the capabilities of the G700SE-M tactical GPS-enabled camera. Long Beach PD needed a way to accurately geo-tag operational photographs that would also contain GPS coordinates of ‘objects’ within the photos and attribute data that would describe each photo (i.e. operation ID, unit ID, operator’s name, date, time, etc.).

The objective of the dive operation was to clear the Long Beach Harbor area for security reasons in preparation for the arrival of Chinese Vice President, Xi Jinping. The Long Beach Police Department, Los Angeles Fire Department, and Long Beach Harbor Police all collaborated in securing the ‘underwater’ areas by carefully investigating various regions of the enormous shipping vessel that the Vice President would be standing in front of for the occasion, in addition to the posts beneath the pier supporting the loading dock.

Each team was given a specific area to clear, with the Long Beach Police Department assigned to the ship’s propeller (approximately 15-20 feet in diameter) and approximately 400 pier support posts that encompassed nearly half of the loading dock area to be used during the visit.

Todd Lushinsky, Director of Business Development at Geo Tactical Solutions, accompanied Long Beach Harbor Police during the field operation to demonstrate the features and capabilities of the G700SE-M tactical GPS camera. Using the advanced GPS and ‘Memo’ features of the camera, operators were able to collect GPS coordinates of photographed ‘objects’ such as the ship’s propeller and pier posts while tagging each photograph with attribute data (‘memos’) such as GPS date and time, operator’s name, unit ID, operation type, and so on.

In effect, each photograph collected in the field captured complete who, what, when, where and why information, which becomes critical during post-processing, photo mapping, reporting, and when using the photographs as evidence in litigation cases.

The full sweep took approximately 3 hours with the dive team securing the location swiftly and efficiently. During that time, approximately 80 photographs were collected using the G700SE-M.

After field data collection, the digital image files were uploaded into PhotoGIS (GTS’ photo mapping software) and processed to ensure geo-location accuracy. From within the PhotoGIS application, reports can be generated and disseminated on the fly and digital image files may be exported to common formats suitable for use in popular GIS programs such as ArcGIS, Google Earth, and GeoSuite.

During the operation, Sergeant Smock of Long Beach PD and the rest of the team immediately recognized value in utilizing the G700SE-M GPS camera for future investigations and soon afterwards decided to adopt the systems into their existing workflow.

Major factors influencing Long Beach PD’s decision to adopt the G700SE-M GPS cameras included:

1. The ultra-rugged design of the camera for operating in harsh environmental conditions.

2. Ability to acquire the GPS location of distant ‘objects’ within a photograph in addition to the GPS location of the camera itself at the time of image capture.

3. The advanced ‘memo’ feature which allows for collecting attribute data along with each photo and being able to optionally imprint that data onto the image. “This capability is critical for litigation purposes”, stated Mr. Smock of Long Beach PD.

4. Easy mapping, editing, reporting and sharing of geo-referenced photos using PhotoGIS.

5. Ability to integrate geo-referenced photos and associated attribute data (‘memos’) with popular GIS applications such as ArcGIS, Google Earth, and GeoSuite.
