Nike Running Camps help runners become better, faster, and smarter athletes. They provide an educational and inspirational experience for cross country and track and field campers ages 12-18, of all skill levels and abilities. Participants will leave camp with increased running knowledge, new friends, and an enhanced love for the sport.
The first location with guest speakers is Smoky Mountain Running Camp in Asheville, North Carolina. This location runs three consecutive weeks of camp July 11-16, July 18-23 and July 25-30. Week One July 11-16 will feature University of Florida Head Distance Coach, Todd Morgan. His women's x-c team was seventh at the NCAA nationals last fall, the best UF finish ever for both men and women. The Gator indoor track team won the NCAA National Championship with Charlotte Browning winning the individual track and field title in the mile with a PR of 4:35.66. Week Two July 18-23 will feature one of our camp alumnae, Jackie Areson of University of Tennessee. She just finished third in the 5,000m in 15:53 and ran 9:10 to get fourth in the 3,000m at the NCAA Nationals. She will tell us how she has progressed from her high school mile time to running almost as fast three times as far. For Week III July 25-30, Florida State University Coach Karen Harvey joins our staff as a featured speaker. Her Lady Seminole's placed second last fall at the NCAA Nat'l X-C Championships. Her miler finished third, right behind Charlotte Browning.
The second location is our Stanford University “Camp of Champions” Cross Country in Palo Alto, CA. This program will have featured speakers Ian and Julia Dobson during the July 21-25 session. Ian Dobson is a Stanford Alum as well as a ten-time All-American, an NCAA Champion in the 5000m, and a 2008 Olympian. He still holds the Stanford school record in the 5000m, 10,000m and 3000m Steeplechase. He has run 13:15.33 for 5000m. Ian is now a part of the Oregon Track Club in Eugene, Oregon and will offer insight and career guidance. Julia Lucas is also with the Oregon Track Club under Nike. She is a three-time All-American and two-time ACC Champion while competing for North Carolina State. She has run 9:03 in the 3000m and 15:50 in the 5000m.
The third location to offer guest speakers is the nationally recognized Five Star Cross Country Camp in Rock Hill, New York. This camp offers an event-packed week at Iroquois Springs August 8th through the 14th. Speakers at this camp include Dick Beardsley, Richard Ruffalo, Tom Cuffe, and Bryan Kovalsky. Dick Beardsley lost the 1982 Boston Marathon by two seconds to Alberto Salazar, but he’s won the hearts of Five-Star Campers for many years. Those who saw the entire camp audience burst out of its seats to give “Beards” a standing ovation after a 2008 talk will never forget it. We welcome him back. Richard Ruffalo, a master motivator, author, educator, and internationally recognized athlete, he inspires a wide range of audiences everywhere. At age 32, he lost his eyesight but never lost his vision. He is the winner of four different world titles in shot put, discus, javelin, and power lifting. He has earned 14 international gold medals, won 32 national titles, set nine world and 15 national records, and has won 13 USA Track and Field K-2ster’s State Titles against sighted competitors. A local legend, Tom Cuffe brings his enthusiasm and zest for running, training and life to Five Star in 2010. As the head Cross Country Coach at Farrell High School in New York, Tom Cuffe has produced more than 48 All-Americans. This will be is 14th appearance at Five Star.
