Pedata RV Center responds to numbers released by the National Association of State Park Directors (NASPD). The survey of 28 state park systems reported on camping activity in 2009. 27 of the surveyed state park systems experienced increases (the average increase from 2008 to 2009 was 7.38%). Only 1 of the surveyed state park systems experienced a decrease. The single exception was Hawaii and since tourism in general dropped drastically for Hawaii in 2009 the decrease in camping could be expected.

Gerard Pedata of Pedata RV Center responded, “In addition to the increase in camping there was also a 6.94% increase in state park visitations recorded in the NASPD’s report (with the only exceptions being New Jersey and Arkansas). We think the continued health of the RV industry during the sluggish economy is due to the emotional importance Baby Boomers place on lifestyle events like RVing.”

Baby Boomers continue to spend on leisure activities and retail spending. They continue to place importance on those recreational activities they are passionate about (golf, skiing, boating, RVing, etc). Baby Boomers may reduce their spending, but the reduction will not be accomplished by removing leisure activities.

When spending reductions are necessary this particular consumer group tends to view their leisure activities as emotionally important; they are not seen as discretionary. If economic conditions limit expenditures, Baby Boomers typically look closer to home to fulfill their lifestyle needs. Baby Boomers who recreate with motorhomes, travel trailers, and toy haulers may choose to create experiences at nearby RV parks suitable for short vacations or day trips.
