San Francisco, CA (PRWEB) September 04, 2012

Seventeen percent of kids in the United States are obese. As a result, a shocking 12 million children suffer from health problems such as cardiovascular disease and pre-diabetes, and are at a higher risk for contracting several types of cancer as adults due to their weight.

For most of his life, Tiger Greene was categorized in this 17%; by the age of 12 he weighed 250 pounds—twice the normal weight for a child of his age—had sleep apnea, was pre-diabetic, and had signs of fatty liver disease and heart damage. Greene knew he had to change his weight or risk his life, but found that he had nowhere to look for inspiration; diet books and television shows were all geared towards an adult population. Undeterred by the lack of resources, Greene decided that if there was no weight loss inspiration for children, he would become one himself.

SACKING OBESITY: The Team Tiger Game Plan for Kids Who Want to Lose Weight, Feel Great, and Win on and off the Playing Field (HarperOne; September 2012; Hardcover; $25.99), inspired by the eponymous wellness camps that Greene founded in collaboration with NFL superstars such as Marcus Stroud, is a guide to weight loss and wellness for children and their families. In Sacking Obesity, Greene provides myriad examples of healthy food options for at home and eating out, as well as training exercises used by the NFL to increase agility, strength, and flexibility. Peppered throughout the book are excerpts from Greene’s friends and family members, who describe their experiences helping Greene during his weight loss journey, and advice from doctors and other health professionals who provide easier, proven strategies for creating an active, healthy lifestyle.

Within just six months of committing to the eating and workout plan outlined in his book, Greene lost 50 pounds and 11 inches from his waistline and no longer needs his medications. However, the drastic changes in physique weren’t the only consequences of his wellness program; by encouraging his entire family to make a change, Greene was able to save not only his life, but the life of his formerly obese father as well. Ultimately, Greene’s story is about more than just weight loss. It is about self discovery, inspiring others, and regaining one’s life and self-confidence at any stage in life.
