Although great strides in safety have been made in the last decade, new risks are emerging with the prevalence of electronic devices. Distracted driving is a growing problem.

After years of declining numbers, an unexpected upturn in highway deaths calls for a renewed focus on safe driving, says Sacramento car accident lawyer Clay Arnold of Arnold Law Firm.

Recently released projections by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) estimate that 7,630 people died in motor vehicle crashes during the first quarter of 2012. That marks a 13.5 percent increase from the corresponding quarter of 2011, and it comes after years of dropping numbers.

“Naturally, we are disappointed by this news,” said Arnold, whose Sacramento personal injury firm handles personal injury and wrongful death cases arising from auto accidents. “We see it as a call for greater efforts to promote safety behind the wheel.”

An NHTSA spokesman said while it was too soon to speculate on reasons for what was termed a “significant increase,” the result is dismaying because first quarters historically produce lower death rates, according to a CNN report. The spike in fatalities is the second largest since 1975, when the NHTSA began recording such data.

The numbers are not broken up by state. But if trends from recent years hold, California will rank at or near the top in the death count. This is only partly explained by population. In 2011, for example, California’s statistical region had a 3.3 percent increase in car crash deaths while other regions showed declines. Sacramento County ranks fifth in the state in fatalities.

“This is an issue that strikes close to home,” Arnold said. “Although great strides in safety have been made in the last decade, new risks are emerging with the prevalence of electronic devices. Distracted driving is a growing problem.”

Another perennial killer is drunk driving. Each year, approximately one-third to one-half of all deaths occur in accidents involving an intoxicated driver, federal statistics show. Other risk enhancers are speeding, fatigued driving, reckless driving and improperly maintained vehicles.

The Arnold Law Firm, which has represented victims of motor vehicle accidents in California since 1975, advocates a culture of motorist safety.

“At the Arnold Law Firm, will continue to promote safe driving,” Arnold said, “just as we will continue to stand up for the rights of those injured by negligent drivers and those who lose loved ones as a result.”
