Winter’s harsh weather can have damaging effects on cars and vehicle glass. Safelite AutoGlass® – the nation’s leading provider of vehicle glass repair and replacement services – recommends windshield crack repair before winter weather sets in.

In cold weather conditions, windshields will develop a more concave shape. As a result, windshield chips and dings are more likely to spread in a horizontal fashion. According to a study conducted by the Motor Industry Research Association, chips were likely to spread more than 80 percent of the time at temperatures of 14 degrees (-10° C). Those tested at 32 degrees were nearly 60 percent likely to crack.

If an icy windshield has a chip, and the driver turns on the defroster or tries to pour hot water on it, the chip could crack out, causing more costly damage.

Windshield crack repair is a better alternative to waiting for the crack to worsen, which would then require full replacement. When a chip is smaller than a dollar bill, it can usually be repaired without replacing the windshield. Ninety percent of chips will crack within three years, according to research from Swansea Metropolitan University.

Windshield damage should not go unattended. In a crash, the windshield is more than a piece of glass, it’s a key part of a car’s structural integrity. In fact, it helps to provide up to 45 percent of the structural integrity of the vehicle’s cabin in a front collision and up to 60 percent in a rollover.

“Safety is our main concern,” said Safelite® President and CEO Tom Feeney. “We want our customers to be prepared for driving in winter weather conditions. If you’re not sure if your chip is serious enough for repair, we’ll provide a full inspection.”

Safelite® uses a patented resin in the repair process, and windshield crack repair only takes about a half an hour. All Safelite® repairs are backed by a national warranty and are guaranteed to pass lease turn-back and state vehicle inspections.
