Electrical switchgear distributor Sälzer UK operates in a very competitive market, so naturally as the company progressed they needed a more powerful business engine. Sälzer UK previously used Sage 50 system before making the switch to a Sage 200-based solution that delivers improved stock control and insightful business analysis and with the help of Datel, the transition was seamless.
Adrian Miller, IT Manager at Sälzer UK commented “An important priority was getting a firm grip on stock levels. We wanted to achieve the improved level of reporting that any growing business needs to maintain tight management control. We also needed a system that could reliably handle increasingly high volumes of transactions and help us to manage over 18,500 product lines.”
A thorough survey of the market took in SAP Business One and Microsoft Dynamics NAV, however as long-time Sage users, Sälzer UK decided to upgrade with Sage as the solution fitted their need. The choice of partner to deliver the new solution was critical and several Sage Business Partners were invited to tender. Miller explains, “The decision has to be right. You're entrusting your business to them to a certain extent. Datel’s response was impressive, they quickly grasped our business, showing that they understood our objectives and requirements”
The move to the new solution went remarkably smoothly with minimal interruption to day-to-day business. Adrian went on to say that, “Datel’s tried and tested methodology came into play in ensuring that it was all much quicker and easier than we could have hoped. We closed down sales order processing one afternoon and by 11.00 the next morning we were back up and running and processing orders.”
The solution is now used by ten staff in departments ranging from sales order processing through to finance. Instead of having to consult a multiplicity of spreadsheets, managers will have ready access to good quality management information through improved reporting and business analysis.
Emphasising the importance of effective stock control, Adrian continues, “Fast delivery of stock is a key differentiator of our business. Currently, if a customer places an order for an out-of-stock item, there could be four to six weeks’ lead time before it becomes available if it’s not in stock in Germany either and has to be manufactured from scratch. With Sage 200, we’ll be more aware of which are our fastest – and slowest – moving lines, so that we can be more proactive in spotting emerging patterns and hold appropriate levels of stock to meet demand.”
In Sage 200, Sälzer has a system that will evolve with the business. In the future, the company may consider implementing Sage 200 CRM (customer relationship management) software. Adrian says, “This could play a very helpful role in developing and maintaining close relationships with our valued customers in a more integrated way. As always, we know we can call on Datel to help us to get it right for the business.”
