After its first two electric boats proved successful, popular, environmentally friendly and in need of less maintenance, Bay Area Tradewinds Sailing School and Club, located at 2580 Spinnaker Way in Richmond, converted a third fleet boat from a diesel engine to an all-electric motor. The third boat is expected to go into service in January 2012.

“Our customers say that they love the quiet motors, the cleanliness of the boat without diesel, oil and exhaust smells, and the simplicity of the electric motor to prepare and check out,” Tradewinds owner and operator Brandy Kepner said.

Electric-motor boats have no fuel of any type on board. Instead, they have electric batteries and are recharged at the dock overnight. Advanced Marine Electric Propulsion supplied the sailing club with the motors and controllers. The boats are cost effective and require near zero maintenance – there are no fuel filters, oil filters, belts, pulleys and water pumps; and the cost of conversion from diesel to electric is less than a new diesel engine.

The new electric boats are extremely popular in the club; and in most cases, they are reserved and used twice as much as diesel boats. Sailors also enjoy them because motoring them is almost as silent and peaceful as sailing them.
