A study from the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery (ASAPS) shows there were almost 10 million surgical and nonsurgical cosmetic enhancement procedures performed in the U. S. in 2009. Breast augmentation was the most common procedure for women, accounting for over 310,000 procedures, 40% of which utilized silicone breast implants. On the fourth anniversary of the FDA’s decision to re-approve the use of silicone in breast augmentation procedures, board-certified plastic surgeons W. Tracy Hankins, MD and Dr. Samuel Sohn say they concentrate on educating their Las Vegas plastic surgery patients to help them make the correct choice for their particular cosmetic enhancement needs.

Following a 14-year moratorium on the use of silicone in breast enhancement procedures, during which extensive studies regarding the overall effects of silicone gel on the body were conducted, the FDA re-approved the use of silicone in 2006. At their plastic surgery practice, Dr. Hankins and Dr. Sohn say the choice between saline and silicone breast implants in Las Vegas centers on patient preference and cosmetic enhancement expectations. The doctors add that the decision process is as unique as each patient and procedure they perform; however, patients typically express additional concern regarding the safety of silicone and the natural appearance of saline.

When considering breast augmentation in Las Vegas, Dr. Hankins and Dr. Sohn say saline and silicone breast implants have similarities such as an outer silicone shell, but they also have separate kinds of benefits and differ in material and consistency. The doctors say the major difference present in silicone implants is the gel component, which tends to give the breasts a look and feel more closely resembling natural breast tissue. Regardless of the type of implant chosen, Dr. Hankins and Dr. Sohn say a decision is made only after all options have been discussed during the consultation process.

Whether performing a breast augmentation with silicone implants, or other procedures such as a breast lift in Las Vegas, Dr. Hankins and Dr. Sohn say patient education is extremely important to them, and further enhances their ability to meet their patient’s needs and expectations. They add that discussing the patient’s overall cosmetic enhancement plan, whether that includes saline or silicone implants, is the first step in the plastic surgery process as they strive for patient satisfaction and safety with every procedure.
