This report, was released by a group known as The Project on Student Debt, which is an initiative of The Institute for College Access & Success, or TICAS. The report was entitled, “Student Debt and the Class of 2011” and it was released in October of 2012. The report provided statistics regarding the amount of student loan debt incurred by people who have finished their college degrees and broke that average debt down by state.

The report indicated that the average person in California who finishes his or her post-secondary education graduates with an average student loan debt load of $18,879, which ranks 46th highest among the 50 states and the District of Columbia. Overall, more than 66 percent of all college graduates in 2011 in the United States finished their schooling owing some amount in student loans, and the nationwide average for that loan debt stood at $26,600.

The state whose graduates owed the highest average amount in student loans upon graduation was New Hampshire, with graduates there owing an average of $32,440. The state with the lowest average in the country was Utah, with an average student loan debt load of $17,227. These averages include all forms of recorded borrowing including government-guaranteed student loans as well as private student loans.
