The San Diego immigration lawyers at the Golden State Law Group represent clients who need help in clarifying and resolving legal issues relating to visas, green cards, status adjustments, family immigration, asylum, naturalization and deportation defense among others. The attorneys at the firm have recently reviewed a study that was completed and released by the Human Rights Watch and they would like to bring about awareness with regards to it as the federal government deals with the issue of immigration reform.

According to the study, which was entitled, “Turning Migrants into Criminals” was released on May 22, 2013 (URL:http://www.hrw.org/news/2013/05/22/us-prosecuting-migrants-hurting-families) and it detailed statistics regarding the number of federal criminal prosecutions that are occurring that relate to illegal immigration. According to the findings in the study, federal prosecutions for illegal entry into the United States have increased by a factor of 1,400 percent during the past 10 years. In addition, federal prosecutions for illegal reentry into the United States have increased by a factor of 300 percent during that same time period.

According to the study, it states that more than 80,000 people were convicted of these crimes during the calendar year of 2012 alone, and that these prosecutions account for more than 40 percent of all criminal prosecutions brought forth by the federal government. The type of prosecution that ranks second, according to these statistics, was federal drug crimes, which accounted for 22 percent of all federal criminal prosecution cases during the calendar year of 2012. Finally, the study points out that as of March 2013, more than 22,000 prisoners are serving time for federal immigration crimes as compared to approximately 10,000 in 1999.

The San Diego immigration lawyers at the Golden State Law Group would like to make as many people as possible aware of this data, as it only underlines the extreme importance of having the government achieve some type of immigration reform. Doing so could lead to a downturn in the number of federal prosecutions and convictions for these crimes and it could also lead to a lowering of the federal prison population given the current statistics and situation. The attorneys at the firm encourage anyone whose immigration status may be uncertain to contact an attorney to move towards resolving these issues.
