In her new novel “Dead Mentors” (published by Balboa Press) author Sandra Nichols explores the theme of self-awareness by creating a story of hope, perseverance and ultimate success.

“Dead Mentors” is the story of Sophia Deming, a lonely South Florida healthcare manager. Sophia is miserable at her job and lives with the regret of her failed ambitions as an artist. Her lifelong quest for an authentic life truly begins with the discovery of her deceased mother’s play. When a stage production of her mother’s work begins in Canada, Sophia encounters a series of misfortunes in Florida that mirror those of the play’s main character and force her to confront her darkest fears. On opening night of the play, as her mother’s portrait is unveiled upon the stage, Sophia discovers the secret of her emotional captivity.

One of Nichols’ most compelling conceits in “Dead Mentors” is her use of the story-within-a-story construct. “A psychic healer channels Sophia from the shores of Prince Edward Island and follows three existential journeys,” Nichols explains. “His own, Sophia’s and that of the play’s main character.”
