Those who are thorough gathering facts and presenting their claim in an organized professional manner will have a better claim experience and possibly a higher settlement.

Since the first week after Superstorm Sandy devastated the east coast, Property Loss Consultant and Public Insurance Adjusting firm, Tutwiler & Associates has been assisting policyholders with their claims. But Charles R. “Dick” Tutwiler, President of the firm says he still sees policyholders making mistakes that can jeopardize and compromise their insurance settlement. In order to assist policyholders, the firm is offering free question and answer sessions that he hopes will dispel some common misunderstandings about the claims and settlement process. The complimentary town hall format meetings are being offered to business and church groups, condominium and homeowner associations and their residents in Long Island and greater New York city area. To schedule, organizations can call 516-415-1235 or email tutwiler(at)publicadjuster(dot)com.

“This is the time when Superstorm Sandy claims are being denied and payments delayed due to requests for additional information,” says Tutwiler. “As a result, people become frustrated, give up or just don’t understand their options,” he laments. For example: Policyholders need to understand that they have a right to use their own contractors and should not feel pressured to use those pushed on them by the insurance company. They also can reopen claims if additional covered damage is found. The claim settlements offered by insurance companies do not always accurately reflect the actual costs of repair due to material shortages and inflated labor costs. According to Tutwiler, there is no need to rush a settlement. “Those who are thorough gathering facts and presenting their claim in an organized professional manner will have a better claim experience and possibly a higher settlement,” he states. “We’re hoping to help policyholders get to that point with these information sessions,” he said.
