From a leading U.S. golf destination, Sarasota is fast emerging as world-class Florida venue for major competitions in rowing and triathlon, a development that augurs well too for the property market in the county, Sarasota Bay Real Estate said. Much of the action in these two Olympic sports is centered at the Nathan Benderson Park proposed venue of the 2017 World Rowing Championship for which Sarasota and Bradenton have pooled resources in filing a bid this past February as host of the prestigious international event.

As part of the hosting bid, more than $40 million have been earmarked for an ongoing development of the 600-acre park which has a 500-acre lake as its centerpiece. Part of the funding, estimated at $20 million, is being raised from private donors for improvements related to the hosting bid of the World Rowing Championship.

This year, construction is focused on 2,200-meter racing lanes, grandstands, along with an athlete training center and a multi-use boathouse. These and other support facilities are being developed in a unique, 30-acre “regatta island” fashioned as an Olympic Village. The NBP development also hopes to capture hosting of other major paddle sports events, such as canoe and kayak races, as well as dragon boat racing. Nathan Benderson Park has been hosting rowing regattas since 2009.

The 2013 U.S. Rowing Masters Championships, scheduled this August, is another anticipated event at the Nathan Benderson Park. Last year, the event was held on Lake Quinsigamond, Worcester, Massachusetts, and drew a record of more than 2,000 competitors from 36 states and eight clubs from Canada.
