SavaLawn Announces Fall 2009 - Ideal Time to Seed Lawns
SavaLawn and horticultural experts reveal that excessive rain earlier this year has stressed many east coast lawns leaving weakened root systems, thinning lawns, dead patches or lawns that are off-color. Taking action this fall is critical in reestablishing a vibrant lawn for next spring.
Bedford Hills, NY (PRWEB) October 8, 2009 -- Excessive rain earlier this year has stressed many east coast lawns leaving weakened root systems, thinning lawns, dead patches or lawns that are off-color. SavaLawn, the Northeast/Mid-Atlantic leader in lawn care emphasizes that taking action this fall is critical in reestablishing a vibrant lawn for next spring.
University of Georgia Cooperative Extension plant pathologist Alfredo Martinez said, "Excessive rainfall creates an unfavorable soil environment for root growth. The oxygen is displaced in the soil pores by water. Without oxygen, root growth is restricted. The result is weak or dead plants."
Matt Lindner, Lawn Care Director for SavaLawn said, "Stressed roots need a boost of new seed to strengthen the lawn for the upcoming year. On the positive side, the unusually high rainfall of the 2009 spring has deeply saturated the soil enough to provide a perfect environment for seed to flourish."
In the fall the young plants have better growing conditions without the extreme heat of summer. The cooler fall nights won't affect the potential growth/germination as the soil temperatures are still in the acceptable moderate range. Another favorable condition of seeding in the fall is that most of the weeds that compete with grass are dead and diseases are under control for the rest of the year. Weed and disease treatments cannot be sprayed on new grass without injuring or killing it. The new grass will have the fall and spring seasons to mature before facing all the stress of summer: heat, traffic, competition, mowing, inappropriate watering, diseases, etc.
Lindner also noted that ideally an entire lawn should be seeded in lieu of bare spots alone to introduce new variety of grasses which can aid in insect / disease tolerance and assist with handling drought stress.
We have a few more weeks to maximize seeding time. The rule of thumb is that successful seeding can be done as late as October, or until the first frost.
