SAYS http://www.says.com, a Malaysian based tech start-up launches its ‘people-powered’ news site to four countries in the Asia Pacific region, namely India, Australia, Singapore and the Philippines. Users crowd-curate trending topics, enabling others to rapidly discover, share and discuss local and global news topics on the SAYS website.
The SAYS interface enables users to ‘remix’ a news topic of their choice by adding links of relevant online media into a remix: excerpts from news articles, Youtube videos, images, infographics, Wikipedia links, Facebook pages and more. Sources are displayed as cards, designed to be pleasing to the eye and optimised for quick scanning. Remixes are categorised under eight news channels, namely News, Fun, Inspiration, Design, Sports, Tech, Gossip and Entertainment. Top three featured remixes from across SAYS channels are compiled into an email newsletter and distributed to users who subscribe, once a day.
“Today, people are addicted to rapid news updates. You either get your news from a tweet or a friend’s post on your Facebook wall. Gone are the days when people relied on newspapers the next morning for their news fix. People nowadays are most attracted to topics that are trending by their groups of influence,” Khailee continues. “By ‘remixing’ news topics, you get the gist of the news and a more holistic context to a topic – something a single news source might not be able to achieve alone.”
Apart from starting a remix, all SAYS users are given the freedom to add relevant sources to remixes other than their own, acknowledged by the community as ‘Contributors’ of a news topic. Users can also Spark A Discussion by creating polls and voting on polls. The ‘Top Broadcaster’ recognition is given to users who succeed in gathering the biggest audience to a particular remix they’ve shared. SAYS does this by tracking unique visitors via unique URLs given to every user who shares a remix.
Up and coming features include the ability to follow favorite curators, a bookmarklet browser plug-in, adding tags to a remix and new channels. In conjunction with its launch in Asia Pacific, SAYS is running its MacBook Air Giveaway from now till 31 July 2012 at http://contest.says.com
